This post will tell you the insiders perspective of the EU crisis and the poor. It will tell you why there are protests. It is not so simple as it looks.
When I was in Greece I saw many poor people. Hard working poor people. I am from Poland and I would rather live in Poland than Greece although in theory Greece is a richer country. In Greece, the tourist money, the government budget money, the EU money in the past it all went to a few.
Why the crisis is about the rich and not the poor
Now people are calling for increases in taxes (for small business) and cutting teachers and nurses salaries (which are low). People from the outside do not realizes why people are protesting. It is not because the protestors are greedy and rich, it is because the rich and greedy take it all and say ‘let them eat cake’.
From the outside it people say oh it is just a mediterranean country that does not like to work, or that it is socialist and everyone wants benefits. I do not see it this way. I see a feudal society of oligarchs and rich in government that have kept the people in line by making promises they can not keep. corruption is everywhere from my friends that live in Greece. The government has been so corrupt.
Socialism always impedes transparency and the poor are the ones who suffer the most. Democracy, and capitalism combined help the poor. The one lesson from the EU crisis is if you want to help a country and the poor to not trust your government will help anyone but themselves.
